In the Department of Education, data is the heartbeat of effective teaching. After administering a quarterly exam or a summative test, our job isn't finished once the scores are recorded. The real work begins with Test Item Analysis.
Are you looking for a way to pinpoint exactly which competencies your students have grasped and which ones need more time? EduFilesPH is proud to offer a Free Automated Table of Mastery (TOM) Template. This tool is specifically designed to help educators bridge the gap between assessment and mastery.
What is a Table of Mastery (TOM)?
A Table of Mastery, often referred to as Item Analysis, is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate student performance against specific Learning Competencies (MELCs). Instead of looking at a student's total score, the TOM looks at individual test items to see how the entire class performed on a specific skill.
By using a Table of Mastery, you move away from "guessing" what to review and move toward Data-Driven Instruction.
Understanding the Mastery Levels
Our automated template uses the standard DepEd percentage thresholds to categorize student performance. Once you input your data, the template will automatically label each competency:
- Highly Mastered (91% – 100%): Students have a deep understanding; no immediate review is needed.
- Mastered (80% – 90%): The majority of the class understands the concept well.
- Nearly Mastered (51% – 79%): Students have a basic grasp but require reinforcement or additional examples.
- Not Mastered (0% – 50%): This indicates a significant learning gap. These competencies should be prioritized for remedial sessions or "re-teaching" in the next quarter.
How to Use the Automated Template
We’ve made the process as simple as possible so you can spend your time on lesson planning rather than data entry:
- Input Basic Information: Fill in your School Name, Subject (e.g., Science, Math, English), and the Quarter.
- Enter Item Data: Count how many students answered each specific item correctly and encode it into the "No. of Correct Responses" column.
- Automatic Calculation: The template instantly calculates the Percentage of Correct Responses.
- Identify Mastery: The "Remarks" column will automatically change color and label (e.g., Mastered or Not Mastered) based on your data.
- Analyze and Act: Look at the items marked "Not Mastered" and use them as the basis for your next Intervention Plan.
Benefits of Using This Tool
- Targeted Interventions: Don't waste time reteaching things students already know. Focus only on the "Not Mastered" skills.
- Accurate Documentation: This template serves as perfect MOV (Means of Verification) for your RPMS-PPST portfolio, showing that you monitor and evaluate learner progress.
- Improved Outcomes: When you teach to the gap, student scores naturally improve in the next assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is this applicable for the MATATAG Curriculum? Yes! While competencies change, the method of analyzing mastery through item placement remains the standard for all DepEd grade levels.
Can I use this for a 50-item test? Absolutely. The template is flexible. Simply add or delete rows to match the number of items in your specific examination.
What if my MPS is high but my Mastery is low? This usually happens if students performed well on easy items but failed the difficult ones. The Table of Mastery helps you see this discrepancy clearly.
